Bromley 27 - Gravesend 26

As if Gravesend didn’t learn enough from last season chances need to be taken if you are going to come away with the spoils following another close loss at Bromley.

With the hosts making the most of the advantage of the slope in the first half it was no surprise to see them on the scoreboard first with Gravesend being too passive and lightweight in the tackle allowing Bromley quick ball from which they took full advantage to open up a 12-0 lead.  Les Falefatu reduced the arreas following good work from the forwards but as against Sutton last week Gravesend were unable to retain possession allowing Bromley to score again and take a 17-7 lead in to half time.

With the elements in their favour and the slope advantage Gravesend were soon on the front foot.  Ben Hope was first to make the most of a fine Finley White miss pass and run in near the corner.   Bromley though who looked dangerous throughout soon responded to once again take their lead to 10 points.  Gravesend all of a sudden found the agression and desire to muster their best play.  Josh Mackenzie managed to force his way over before Finley White saw a small gap and darted under the posts to put Gravesend 26-22 in the lead.  With 15 minutes to play all that was needed was to play in the other half of the pitch.  Unfortunately for Gravesend some errant decisions and needless penalties gave Bromley the hope that they needed.

Gravesend’s defence which for so long had been a weakness held firm and from one attack young Bailey Williams was harshly penalised and received a yellow card.  What ensued was a monumental defensive effort which seemingly kept Bromley at bay and when on one such attack they were deemed to be held up with time on the clock it looked like the game was won.  Unfortunately the kick went astray and Bromley had good field position with a scrum under the posts.  They used this to good effect and set loose their backs who had been dangerous all game allowing them to score and snatch the victory with what was the last play.

Gravesend’s next game is home to Beckenham on 8th November
