The new rugby season got underway this past weekend and Gravesend visited recently relegated Horsham in the season opener.
Fresh from two seasons playing at a higher level Horsham were expected to be a more physical and well drilled side. They did not disappoint but what ensued was a game where Horsham’s obvious ability was met with a fantastic Gravesend defensive effort. The final score of 21-21 following a late try from Stan Dadson was nothing less than the men in black & white deserved. It still needed a fine kick out wide from Rhys Betts to ensure Gravesend can away with 3 points for their endeavours.
Playing on a 3G pitch in a gusty breeze it was always going to be a fast open game. The first half however ended on 7-5 to the home team with Gravesend’s score coming from new signing Lesley Falefatu after barnstorming run. This though did not tell the full story as Gravesend but in some great tackles under immense pressure while playing into the wind.

If they expected the second half to be easier they were wrong as Horsham had their best spell of the game. Gravesend resisted and despite scoring Horsham could not pull away as Betts kept the deficit to within 3 points.
On 70 minutes what looked like the decisive passage of play Gravesend were reduced to 14 men when Matt Bruce was yellow carded for one too many team offence and then Horsham scored. 21-11 with 10minutes to go.
Gravesend reduced the deficit to 21-14 with another Betts penalty before Dadson pounced on a scrappy line out close to the Horsham line to secure the bonus point and then with the Betts kick being added Gravesend had got what seemed a few minutes before and unlikely draw.
There was still time to take the restart but any hopes of a miracle drop goal or unlikely win were squashed as the referee blew his whistle. A fine result against what will be one of the better sides this season.
Next week Gravesend take on Old Colfeians at home.
